Optimization

⏱ 20 min★ Up to 100 XP

Lesson Objective

Optimization means:

Finding the best possible outcome among many possibilities.

The derivative helps us find where improvement stops.

The Enzyme Temperature Challenge

Here is the experiment data.

Temperature (°C)Activity
20°C15
30°C45
40°C80
50°C120
60°C85

You can run the experiment at only ONE temperature.

Which would you choose?

50°C — Activity = 120. The highest in the table.

Easy choice when all the values are visible.

Realisation

You just performed optimization.

You scanned all the options and selected the one with maximum output.

The Curve

Forget the table. Just look at the shape.

203040506070Temperature (°C)04080120Activity50°C

The optimum is somewhere near the top.

How can we find it exactly?

Critical Point

f′(x) = 0

The system is neither improving nor worsening.

f′=0
A — Hill

Maximum

f′=0
B — Valley

Minimum

f′=0
C — Flat

Not max or min

All three have slope zero.

Are they all optima?

The Ball Test

Place a ball at the critical point. What happens next tells you everything.

Case 1 — Hill

Ball rolls away.

Case 2 — Valley

Ball rolls toward center.

Case 3 — Flat Plateau

Ball barely moves.

Two Variables

Enzyme activity depends on two inputs.

Activity=f(Temperature,pH)

Where is the highest point?

Interpretation

No improvement remains in any direction.

Moving along Temperature or pH from the peak only decreases activity.
