Watching it happen in a single Petri dish
In 2016, researchers built a two-foot-wide Petri dish divided into bands of steadily increasing antibiotic concentration — the outer bands drug-free, the centre a thousand times the dose that kills a normal E. coli. They released bacteria at the edges and filmed what happened for eleven days.
Bacteria are released only in the drug-free outer band of a plate with increasing antibiotic concentration toward the centre. Over eleven days, will they ever be found in the highest-concentration zone?
